Star Wars - Stormtrooper (Ralph McQuarrie) Statue
"His genial contribution, in the form of unequalled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy. When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph's fabulous illustrations and say, 'do it like this’.” - George Lucas
Ralph McQuarrie was the first to bring Star Wars to a visual world. Commissioned by George Lucas to illustrate several scenes from the script of the film Star Wars in 1975, McQuarrie designed for the first time many of the film’s characters, including Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO and the iconic Stormtroopers. While many of these designs were ultimately changed and adapted for the screen, looking at his illustrations you can see the impact these pieces had on Lucas going forward in the film’s production.
Sideshow Collectables have paid tribute to Ralph’s work on the franchise through the release of this 1:5th scale Stormtrooper Statue, based on his pre-production artwork. As seen in his early incarnations, this Stormtrooper is presented with multiple display options - carrying a shield in one hand while wielding either a lightsaber of blaster in the other. The Stormtrooper’s helmet and armour are more reminiscent of fighter pilots than what would eventually be shown on screen, yet the general form and structure of the outfit remain true to the final vision.
The first in Sideshow’s Ralph McQuarrie Concept Artist Series, be sure to pick up this homage to the history of Star Wars for your collection.
